Amidst the deepening political rift, Duterte’s son urges President Marcos Jr to resign and calls him ‘lazy’

In his statement, Duterte’s son accused President Marcos Jr of being lazy and uncompassionate, marking a sharp departure from the initial collaboration between the two families

Former Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte’s son has publicly urged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr to resign, further intensifying the rising discord between the two politically influential families. The rift comes amidst a shifting political landscape, with the once-united front showing signs of strain over policy deviations and allegations of laziness and lack of compassion.

The call for resignation, made on Sunday, January 28, by Duterte’s son, comes as a stark rebuke to the current administration led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The unexpected alliance formed during the 2022 elections between Marcos and Duterte’s daughter, Sara Duterte, saw her being appointed as vice president. However, current developments reveal deepening fault lines within this political alliance.

In his statement, Duterte’s son accused President Marcos Jr of being lazy and uncompassionate, marking a sharp departure from the initial collaboration between the two families. The alliance forged during the election campaign had raised expectations of policy continuity, especially in areas such as anti-drugs and foreign policies, which were hallmarks of Duterte’s presidency. However, the recent cracks in the coalition signal a deviation from these established norms, contributing to the growing discontent within the Duterte camp.

Political observers note that the public call for resignation is a significant escalation of tensions, as it brings internal disputes within the ruling coalition into the public domain. The rift also emphasizes the complexities of political alliances in the Philippines, where personal and familial connections often play a pivotal role.

The mayor of the Philippines’ third most populous city Davao, Sebastian Duterte said that there had been a reappearance of crime after the relaxation of his father’s hardline campaign. He even accused President, Marcos Jr of endangering innocent Filipinos by permitting the Americans in, a reference to expanding the access of the United States to the military bases, also including several close to Taiwan. He also objected to the decision of Marcos to restart peace negotiations with the communist rebels by saying that he knew nothing about the suffering of people living in an area that once was a rebel stronghold.

He asserted by saying, “You are lazy and you lack compassion. That’s why we are unhappy.” The call for resignation sets the stage for a challenging period ahead, as the Philippines navigates through internal political turbulence that could shape the course of the nation’s leadership and policies.
