Canada reaffirms commitment to strengthen ties with India amidst controversy

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reiterated Canada’s commitment to enhancing relations with India despite “credible allegations” of Indian government involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Trudeau emphasized the importance of engaging constructively with India, considering its growing global influence. He highlighted India’s economic power and geopolitical significance, stating that Canada is serious about building closer ties.

While underscoring the need for India to collaborate with Canada to uncover the truth, Trudeau mentioned receiving assurances from the US that the issue would be raised during Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s meeting with his Indian counterpart, S Jaishankar, in Washington DC.

Trudeau emphasized the significance of democratic countries and rule of law in addressing such serious allegations and affirmed Canada’s approach grounded in responsible and lawful engagement with its partners, including the Indian government.
