Recent reports from Bloomberg unveiled that Cathay Pacific has taken the initial steps towards potential acquisitions by issuing a “request for information” from industry giants Airbus (AIR.PA) and Boeing (BA.N). The objective is clear- replacing some of its ageing mid-sized widebody jets to ensure a modern, efficient, and adaptable fleet.

In response to inquiries, Cathay Pacific released a statement emphasizing their strategic approach, stating that they were evaluating options for a versatile, mid-sized widebody aircraft capable of undertaking a range of missions and fostering the growth of their passenger and cargo business. This signals the airline’s intent not only to enhance passenger services but also to fortify its cargo operations with an aircraft capable of meeting the diverse demands of both sectors.

The consideration for mid-sized widebody aircraft was first publicly disclosed by Cathay in late 2022, reflecting the airline’s forward-thinking approach to fleet management. Currently, the airline’s fleet includes 43 A330s, with an average age of nearly 15 years as of June 30, 2023. The potential replacement options for these ageing aircraft encompass modern marvels such as the Airbus A330neo and A350, along with Boeing’s technologically advanced 787.

Cathay Pacific’s recent endeavours in fleet renewal are evident. In the previous month, the airline finalized a firm order for six A350 freighters, with an option to acquire an additional 20. This move aligns with Cathay’s strategy to retire its ageing Boeing 747 cargo jets. Furthermore, Cathay Pacific has solidified its commitment to modernizing its passenger fleet.

In September 2023, the airline placed an order for 32 Airbus A320neo and A321neo single-aisle aircraft, scheduled for delivery by 2029. These additions contribute to Cathay’s overarching goal of maintaining a modern, fuel-efficient, and technologically advanced fleet.

With orders exceeding 70 aircraft, including 21 Boeing 777-9 passenger planes scheduled for delivery from 2025, Cathay Pacific’s determination to evolve and stay competitive is palpable.
