In a tragic incident, at least 73 individuals lost their lives in two bomb explosions near the tomb of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, as reported by Iran’s state media. The attacks occurred on the fourth anniversary of Soleimani’s assassination by the United States, adding a sombre note to the day’s events. Iran’s state broadcaster, Irib, stated that an additional 171 people sustained injuries during the explosions, characterizing the incident as a ‘terrorist attack.’

The blasts targeted a procession near the Saheb al-Zaman mosque in the southern city of Kerman, where hundreds of people were participating in a ceremony to commemorate the influential Iranian general. The video footage circulating online depicted a distressing scene with several bodies on a road, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Qasem Soleimani, regarded as one of the most powerful figures in Iran after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was assassinated in a U.S. drone strike in neighbouring Iraq in 2020. As the commander of the Revolutionary Guards’ overseas operations arm, the Quds Force, Soleimani played a pivotal role in shaping Iranian policy across the region.

Soleimani’s responsibilities included overseeing the Quds Force’s clandestine missions and providing guidance, funding, weapons, intelligence, and logistical support to allied governments and armed groups. Notably, these groups included organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah. The late general’s influence extended beyond Iran’s borders, making his assassination a significant event in the geopolitics of the Middle East.

The decision to carry out the drone strike was made by then-U.S. President Donald Trump, who, in the aftermath of the attack, referred to Soleimani as “the number-one terrorist anywhere in the world.” The assassination heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, escalating an already complex and volatile relationship.

The recent bomb attacks near Soleimani’s tomb on the anniversary of his assassination further amplified the geopolitical tensions in the region. The Iranian authorities are likely to investigate the incident, while the international community observes closely, aware of the potential implications on regional stability.
