Gaza death toll mounts as Israeli strike massacres civilians at evacuation center

The Gaza Health Ministry confirmed another 83 Palestinians were killed across the besieged enclave in just the latest 24-hour period before the Jabalia massacre, with 105 more injured.

The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza plumbed new depths Saturday as an Israeli air strike massacred Palestinian civilians, including children, while they were attempting to flee an evacuation centre in the Jabalia refugee camp.

At least 15 people were killed by the strike on the centre’s gate as families desperately ran out into the open after enduring days of heavy shelling, according to witnesses. Countless more were injured in the explosion, with no way to rush them to medical care.

The unconscionable attack came amid reports from Palestinian officials that the overall death toll since Israel’s brutal offensive began on October 7 has reached at least 35,386, including numerous children, with 79,366 wounded.

Israel’s military offered the routine insistence that it only targets militant operations, accusing Palestinian groups of using human shields. However, the relentless attacks on densely populated civilian areas and now the killings of families at an evacuation centre have demolished any remaining credibility.

Both the Israeli government and Gaza’s Hamas rulers have tenaciously rejected ceasefire efforts as the region risked teetering into even deeper cycles of unbridled carnage and humanitarian catastrophe.

The UN’s Mideast envoy issued an “urgent, final” warning that basic food and water supplies inside Gaza would completely run out within 48 hours if a resolution was not reached.

As another round of thunderous airstrikes echoed in the distance Monday night, weary Gazans wept openly in the rubble-lined streets, expressing hopelessness that the ceaseless onslaught and killing of innocents would ever find its end.
