Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan has announced the government’s intention to sign a regulation on Monday, aiming to prohibit social media platforms from facilitating social commerce activities.
Under the new regulation, social media platforms will be permitted solely to promote goods and services but will not be allowed to facilitate trade transactions or direct payments. Minister Hasan drew a parallel with television, stating that social and digital media platforms should serve only as promotional spaces, not transactional platforms.
The upcoming regulation represents a revision to Ministerial Regulation No. 50 of 2020.
