Among the standout exhibits was Genesis Systems’ WaterCube, a groundbreaking device the size of a central air conditioning unit, designed to efficiently extract water from the air, potentially providing a sustainable water source for households.
David Stuckenberg, the founder of Genesis Systems, emphasized WaterCube’s mission to tackle global water scarcity. The device’s unique process allows it to extract water from the air, presenting a viable solution in regions where traditional water sources like wells and aquifers have dried up. Stuckenberg highlighted the importance of water sustainability, stating, “Next to air, water is the most important thing.”
The WaterCube taps into trillions of tons of untapped water in the atmosphere, utilizing the increasing water vapour resulting from a warming planet. Stuckenberg described this as “an infinite water source,” and the company aims to democratize the water supply, making it accessible on a broader scale. Additionally, plans are underway to incorporate carbon-capturing features into the WaterCube, aligning with the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
France-based MolluScan showcased another environmentally conscious innovation at CES. MolluScan utilizes sensors wired to sea mussels or clams to detect pollution in waterways, providing real-time data to companies and regulatory authorities. This approach offers a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional water sampling methods, encouraging industries to improve environmental practices.
Several companies highlighted their commitment to sustainability through the increased use of recycled or sustainable materials in product designs. Forvia, a French auto equipment supplier, presented designs incorporating organic materials such as hemp, wood, and pineapple. Matter, backed by Hollywood stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Ashton Kutcher, unveiled filtration technology to capture harmful plastic fibres released during washing machine wastewater, contributing to the fight against microplastic pollution.
Ambient Photonics showcased a solar cell capable of charging from indoor lighting, eliminating the need for batteries in electronic devices. The company, supported by Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, aims to reduce reliance on disposable or rechargeable batteries, promoting a more sustainable approach to powering connected electronics.
South Korean conglomerate SK Group embraced a playful yet impactful approach in its exhibit, illustrating how environmentally friendly technologies could lead to a happier future. The exhibit featured a hydrogen-powered train and a clean energy vehicle guided by artificial intelligence, emphasizing SK Group’s mission to encourage carbon neutrality within the industry.
As CES 2024 emphasized the role of technology in addressing environmental challenges, these green innovations signalled a collective effort by tech firms to contribute to a more sustainable and ecologically responsible future.
