India and the United States are set to strengthen their trade ties and enhance cooperation in critical areas, including the realm of critical minerals, according to statements by United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai.

The announcement followed the annual trade policy talks held in New Delhi on January 12 between Tai and India’s Trade Minister Piyush Goyal. This dialogue is part of Tai’s three-day visit to India, aiming to bolster bilateral trade relations between both countries.

Despite recent diplomatic tensions which arose from Washington’s allegations late last year linking an Indian official to a thwarted plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist leader on U.S. soil, both nations are actively working to improve their trade prospects. In response to these challenges, India has emphasized that any such actions are inconsistent with its government policy and has initiated its investigation into the allegations.

During the talks between Tai and Goyal, India expressed its interest in establishing a bilateral critical mineral partnership. A representative from India mentioned that the initial steps would involve fact-finding, exploring, and establishing a common vocabulary before progressing to develop tools and ideas in the critical minerals domain.

Additionally, India requested the United States to streamline its visa processes for Indian business professionals. The joint statement issued after the January 12 meeting also highlighted India’s plea for restoring duty-free access to certain goods under the generalized system of preferences, a trade preference program that former President Donald Trump terminated in 2019, affecting India’s access.

In response to India’s concerns, Tai urged India to ensure that its policies related to laptop imports do not impede trade. These discussions exemplify the ongoing efforts to address specific trade challenges and create a more conducive environment for economic collaboration between the two nations.

As India and the United States navigate diplomatic intricacies, their commitment to strengthening economic ties and finding common ground in areas like critical minerals showcases a determination to move beyond recent tensions and foster a robust partnership.
