India calls for diplomacy in Ukrainian conflict in the midst of global concerns

India’s stance reflects a cautious approach, prioritising diplomatic solutions and inclusive dialogue to address the root causes of the conflict.

India has clarified its stance on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine in a recent statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal . Jaiswal emphasized the necessity of dialogue, conversation, and diplomacy as the optimal approach towards resolving the crisis. The remarks were made during a routine news briefing in New Delhi, underlining India’s commitment to peace and diplomacy in global affairs.

Despite the escalation of tensions between Moscow and Kiev, India has chosen to remain non-committal regarding its support for the Ukrainian peace plan. The plan sets out a series of pre-conditions for negotiations between the conflicting parties, with Kiev awaiting Moscow’s willingness to engage in dialogue. India’s stance reflects a cautious approach, prioritising diplomatic solutions and inclusive dialogue to address the root causes of the conflict.

This diplomatic position aligns with India’s broader foreign policy objectives, as articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the country’s presidency of the G20 in the previous year. India’s leadership role in the G20 coincided with a period of global instability, marked by geopolitical tensions, economic challenges, and the serious effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Against this backdrop, India advocated for an alternative agenda centered on peace, progress, dialogue, and consensus, representing the interests of the Global South.

During the G20 summit held in Indonesia in 2022, India played a very crucial role in bridging differences among participating countries regarding the condemnation of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The summit’s communique highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the imperative of peace in today’s world. India’s proactive engagement in development consensus explains its commitment to international cooperation and conflict resolution through dialogue.

The convergence of India’s diplomatic efforts with Ukraine’s aspiration to swiftly end the conflict highlights the potential for constructive engagement on the global stage. India’s role as a mediator and advocate for peace reflects its commitment to promoting stability and security in the international arena. By advocating for dialogue and diplomacy, India seeks to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the crisis while upholding principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
