Israel’s cross-border strikes ignite regional escalation, confirming Blinken’s ‘Metastasis’ concerns

The concern about the risk has been proven right because a regional conflict has already begun and it is the military of Israel carrying out the cross-border attacks, without. Among the various assassinations and aerial strikes by Israel, the latest in a string is the killing of Wissam Tawil in Southern Lebanon last Monday.

The U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during his meetings with the regional leaders this week used a term called “Metastasize” to widely describe the the potential for a much bigger and tragic conflict, acknowledging the risk of the violence continuing in Gaza engulfing other countries in the world.

Wissam Tawil was a commander in the elite Radwan force of Hezbollah. The risk of continuous violence has already begun after the killing of senior Hamas figure Saleh Al Arouri on January 2 by Israel through a drone strike and six other militants in Beirut were also killed by Israel.

That strike of Israel which led to this assassination complicated the talks of negotiation by Egypt. Post the assassination, the leaders of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad told the mediators of Egypt that further negotiations with Israel were off, which eventually led to the closure of potential avenue for talks as well.

It was less than one week before the executed operation when the official Sana news agency of Syria said that Israel carried out two air strikes in twenty-four hours on its territory, that also includes one on Damascus airport. The Damascus airport was thought to have killed almost 11 members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran.

The argument provided by Israel is that such cross-border strikes have one intention and that is to strengthen its security by eliminating possible dangerous enemies, even though often civilians have to go through the impact of these attacks. As long as this fighting in Gaza continues the chance of regional escalation will increase day by day.
