LG and Samsung unveil see-through TVs, transforming home entertainment

South Korean electronics giants LG and Samsung showcase innovative see-through TV models, aiming to revolutionize home entertainment aesthetics.

In a groundbreaking move, South Korean tech giants LG and Samsung are reshaping the landscape of home entertainment with see-through TV models, introducing a new era where TVs seamlessly blend into the décor when not in use.

LG’s transparent offering, the Signature OLED T, was unveiled as “practically invisible when turned off.” Shaped like a glass box, the TV allows viewers to see through the screen when idle, eliminating the presence of a traditional black screen that often disrupts a room’s aesthetics. The transparent feature opens up possibilities for users to display a range of digital content, from high-definition television to digital fish tanks or burning fire, seamlessly integrating with interior design.

Samsung, in response to this emerging trend, showcased its TV screen prototype with embedded micro-sized LEDs. The TV appears as clear as a window when turned off, but when activated, it delivers high-definition imagery. Samsung believes that transparent LEDs are poised to redefine viewing experiences by blurring the line between content and reality.

While transparent TV technology is not entirely new, LG and Samsung aim to make it more appealing to consumers, addressing concerns such as high price points. These innovations align with a broader theme at CES 2024, where major TV manufacturers are emphasizing the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities directly into screens.

AI is becoming a pivotal aspect of TV functionality, enhancing imagery and transforming the viewing experience. Manufacturers like TCL are introducing AI features that instantly convert classic movies or old home films into rich viewing formats, while Hisense’s latest TVs utilize AI to dynamically adjust clarity and immersion based on on-screen content.

Moreover, Samsung envisions TVs evolving into central hubs for smart homes, acting as control points for various connected devices. Beyond entertainment, TVs could incorporate thermal scanning for health insights, reflecting the growing integration of AI in daily life.

LG’s CEO, William Cho, highlighted the significance of AI, describing the world as being at a historical turning point. LG aims to play a role in this transformation by leveraging data from sensors in smart devices worldwide to provide insights into user behaviour patterns.
