Russia claims destruction of U.S.-made Abrams tanks near Avdeyevka

The claimed destruction by Russia of the Abrams tanks would represent a significant blow to Ukraine’s armoured capabilities. The M1 Abrams is one of the most modern and powerful main battle tanks in the world.

The head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Denis Pushilin, has claimed that Russian forces destroyed around six U.S.-made Abrams main battle tanks belonging to Ukrainian forces in the Avdeyevka area.

In an interview with Sputnik news agency, Pushilin stated, “In the Avdeyevka area, Russian forces destroyed about six Abrams tanks.”

He added that while there is no confirmed information yet about new deliveries of the advanced Abrams tanks to Ukraine’s military, the Russian side is targeting and destroying Western-supplied equipment used by Kyiv’s troops.

“There is no information yet about new deliveries of Abrams tanks to Ukraine, but they, like other Western equipment, are being destroyed by the Russian military,” Pushilin said.

If confirmed, the claimed destruction of the Abrams tanks would represent a significant blow to Ukraine’s armoured capabilities. The M1 Abrams is one of the most modern and powerful main battle tanks in the world.

In recent months, the United States and other NATO allies have supplied Kyiv with hundreds of tanks, armoured vehicles, and artillery systems to aid in its fight against Russian forces in eastern Ukraine.

Russia has repeatedly warned that all Western military equipment supplied to Ukraine will be considered legitimate targets on the battlefield. Moscow insists its forces are hitting only military targets as part of what it calls its “special military operation.”

Neither side’s battlefield claims could be independently verified amid the ongoing fighting. However, the reported losses highlight the intense attritional battle unfolding in the Donbas region as each side aims to deplete the other’s armoured forces and secure tactical advantages.
