The border city of Belgorod, Russia, faced yet another harrowing attack as Ukrainian forces targeted civilian areas on Thursday resulting in tragic casualties and extensive damage. Russian air defense forces swiftly intercepted and neutralized 14 projectiles launched during the attack, but the toll on human lives and the property was significant.

Governor of the Belgorod Region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, stated that an air raid siren pierced through the city at 12:21 p.m. Moscow time, indicating the commencement of the attack. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that air defence forces successfully destroyed the incoming RM-70 Vampire rockets, preventing further devastation. However, the attack claimed the lives of six individuals, including a child, and left 17 others wounded, as per the preliminary assessments.

Emergency services immediately mobilized to provide aid to the affected population, with 15 people, including two children, rushed to hospital for immediate medical attention. Eight of the injured individuals are currently in intensive care, highlighting the severity of their conditions. The attack inflicted damage on residential properties, including seven private homes, five residential blocks, and several vehicles, aggravating the plight of civilians already reeling from the violence.

Witnesses recounted the intensity of the attack, underlining the devastation inflicted upon the first floor of a Belgorod shopping mall. While those on the second floor escaped physical harm, the emotional toll on residents and bystanders was profound. Efforts to evacuate individuals from the affected areas were actively undertaken to ensure their safety.

In response to the attack, Roman Starovoit, Governor of the neighbouring Kursk Region, extended condolences to the victims and promised assistance to the residents of Belgorod. He further condemned the indiscriminate targeting of civilian infrastructure, including a shopping mall and residential neighbourhoods, underscoring the need for solidarity and support in times of crisis.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova declared that Russia would seek recourse through international channels, including the UN Security Council, to address the recent act of aggression by Ukrainian forces. The incident emphasizes the urgent imperative for collaborative diplomatic efforts to mitigate tensions and prevent further acceleration of hostilities.

The attack on Belgorod marks a distressing recurrence of violence in the region, following a preceding attack in December that claimed the lives of 25 individuals and left over 100 others injured. Russia responded decisively to that attack, targeting defence facilities in Ukraine in retaliation against the perpetrators.
