The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that the attack, which took place on the evening of February 9, 2024, led to the destruction of one unmanned surface vehicle, while others were counterbalanced through electronic warfare measures.

The Russian Navy successfully obstructed and repelled a terrorist attack instrumented by Ukraine’s unmanned surface vehicles targeting civilian vessels in the southwestern Black Sea. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that the attack, which took place on the evening of February 9, 2024, led to the destruction of one unmanned surface vehicle, while others were counterbalanced through electronic warfare measures.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the attack was executed by unmanned semi-submersible vehicles deployed by the Kyiv regime to target Russian civilian cargo ships navigating the Black Sea. Responding to the imminent threat, Russian Navy patrol ships and aircraft, operating in the area as part of routine missions, swiftly mobilized to counter the strike.

The Russian defence ministry in a statement asserted, “On the evening of February 9, 2024, the Kyiv regime attempted to carry out a terrorist attack on Russian civilian cargo ships in the southwestern Black Sea, using unmanned semi-submersible vehicles. The Russian Navy’s patrol ships and aircraft, which were on a mission in that area, were engaged to repel this attack. One unmanned surface vehicle was destroyed by artillery fire. The remaining were jammed with electronic warfare.”

Regardless of the hostile intent of the attackers, the Russian Defense Ministry made sure that neither civilian cargo ships nor Russian naval vessels sustained any damage as a consequence of the attack. This successful defence operation emphasizes the effectiveness of the maritime security protocols of Russia and its commitment to safeguarding vital sea routes and maritime trade in the region.

The incident serves as a sharp reminder of the current tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the persistent threat posed by asymmetric warfare. The use of unmanned surface vehicles in the attempted attack showcases the evolving nature of maritime security challenges and also emphasizes the requirement for constant vigilance and strong defence capabilities to counter such threats effectively.

As efforts to reduce tensions and foster dialogue between Russia and Ukraine continue, the thwarting of this terrorist attack emphasizes the importance of maintaining intensified readiness and coordination among regional actors to address security threats actively and rapidly. In the aftermath of the incident, renewed emphasis on maritime security measures and cooperation is imperative to ensure the continued safety and stability of maritime operations in the Black Sea.
