The security forces successfully neutralized one of the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) most wanted terrorists and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander, Basit Ahmed Dar, during an intense encounter in Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday night.

The encounter ensued after security forces launched a search operation late on Monday night in the Redwani Payeen area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam. Three terrorists, including Basit Ahmed Dar, were killed in the ensuing gunfight, marking a substantial victory for the security forces.

Dar, a resident of Redwani Payeen, was not only a prominent figure within the LeT but also a commander of its offshoot group, the Resistance Front, TNFF. He was notorious for his involvement in numerous heinous acts, including the targeted killings of civilians and security personnel.

Joining Dar in the operation were two other LeT militants identified as Momin Gulzar and Fahim Ahmed Baba. Their elimination adds to the success of the operation and serves as a blow to the terrorist network in the region.

Inspector General of Police Kashmir V K Birdi hailed the operation as a significant achievement, emphasizing the trio’s involvement in 18 killings, spanning attacks on security personnel, civilians, and minorities.

The successful operation comes in the wake of heightened tensions in the region, with security forces intensifying search operations following an attack on an Indian Air Force convoy in Poonch district on May 4, resulting in the death of an officer and injuries to four others.

Among the three terrorists, two have been identified as Illiyas, a former Pakistan Army commando, and a Pakistani militant known as Hadoon (or Hadun). Additionally, Abu Hamza, the code name of a LeT commander, was also eliminated in the encounter.
