“We have recovered 15 bodies, many of whom were injured,” Sadiqur Rahman, a government administrator in Bhairab, told AFP. Rahman predicted that “the death toll will rise,” and rescuers reported that they were still able to see the victims crushed and trapped beneath wrecked trains. He also added that at least a hundred people have been injured.
Upon reaching the scene, firefighters initiated rescue operations. Mosharraf Hossain, the supervisor of the Bhairab Fire Station, expressed concerns that the casualty count could increase. He mentioned that rescue teams and residents had launched a rescue operation and had recovered the remains of at least 12 individuals.
