Tragic bus accident claims over 20 lives in Gilgit-Baltistan

A bus accident on the Karakoram Highway in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan claimed the lives of at least 20 people, while 21 others were left injured on Friday morning.

According to Riaz, the district rescue officer, the ill-fated bus belonged to a private company and was en route from Rawalpindi to Gilgit when the driver lost control near Gunar Farm around 5:30 am. The bus subsequently overturned and landed perilously close to the banks of the Indus River.

The injured passengers were rushed to Chilas Hospital for medical treatment. However, the rescue officer revealed that while the initial number of injured was 35, many succumbed to their injuries, increasing the death toll.

Faizullah Faraq, the spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, confirmed that three women were among the deceased in this tragic incident.

Local resident Mohammad Zaman informed Dawn.com that a large number of people had gathered at the hospital to donate blood for the injured survivors. He praised the vital role played by the local youth in transferring both the injured and the bodies to the hospital.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but such incidents on the treacherous Karakoram Highway have raised concerns about road safety measures in the region. Authorities have promised a thorough inquiry into the matter and assured that necessary steps will be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future.
