Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized that the United Nations must remain central to multilateralism and global governance during his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the SCO Summit in Astana.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has strongly reaffirmed the vital role of the United Nations in global governance, asserting that the organization’s role must be strengthened rather than weakened. Xi made these comments during a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday, held on the sidelines of the 24th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Astana.

President Xi emphasized that the United Nations is crucial as the central platform for implementing multilateralism and promoting global governance. He emphasized that in an era of increasing global challenges and complexities, the role of the UN in fostering cooperation, promoting peace, and ensuring sustainable development is more crucial than ever. Xi’s remarks highlight China’s commitment to upholding and supporting the multilateral framework established by the UN, which is essential for addressing international issues collectively and effectively.

During the meeting, Xi Jinping expressed China’s strong support for the United Nations and its efforts to promote global peace, security, and development. He acknowledged the significant contributions made by the UN in maintaining international order and facilitating dialogue among nations. Xi pointed out that, in the face of global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, and economic instability, a robust and effective United Nations is indispensable for coordinating international responses and fostering global solidarity.

Xi’s call for a strengthened role of the United Nations comes at a time when multilateralism is facing significant pressures from rising unilateralism and protectionism in some parts of the world. By advocating for a more empowered UN, Xi is reinforcing the need for collective action and cooperative approaches to global issues, which are essential for ensuring a peaceful and prosperous world.

The meeting with UN Secretary-General Guterres provided an opportunity to discuss the critical role of the United Nations in addressing key global challenges. Guterres appreciated China’s support for the UN and acknowledged the importance of multilateralism in promoting sustainable development and international cooperation. He stressed the need for continued support from member states to strengthen the UN’s capacity to respond to emerging global issues and fulfil its mandate effectively.

Xi Jinping also highlighted the alignment between China’s development policies and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He reiterated China’s commitment to contributing to global development through initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which aims to enhance connectivity, foster economic growth, and promote sustainable development worldwide. Xi emphasized that China’s efforts to advance global development are in line with the principles of the UN Charter and the goals of the SDGs, reflecting the country’s dedication to fostering a more equitable and inclusive global order.

The discussion at the SCO Summit in Astana reflects the broader commitment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to supporting multilateralism and enhancing international cooperation. As a key regional organization, the SCO plays a vital role in promoting stability, security, and development in the Eurasian region. The alignment of SCO’s objectives with the principles of the United Nations further reinforces the importance of multilateral approaches to addressing regional and global challenges.
